Chaetomorpha algae

Earlier this week I received the coral frags I ordered from RicksReefs.com, with my order I also purchased a clump of Chaetomorpha algae to add to my refugium setup. Chaetomorpha is also known as Spaghetti or Brillo pad algae and is great for exporting nutrients from a reef system.

Chaetomorpha are green algae with fine, unbranched filaments, consistings of large cells arranged in a single row end to end. The filaments are usually stiff or coarse, not collapsing when removed from water.

Unlike Caulerpa, Chaetomorpha does not produce a number of substances which can create problems. Caulerpa’s go sexual by releasing it’s reproductive products and nutrients back into the water column which would degrade water quality. I’ve decided to eradicate the Caulerpa racemosa that I’ve been using in the refugium now that I’ve added the Chaetomorpha.
